Jiujiteira magazine interview, on breaking down archaic patriarchal systems in BJJ that don't serve us

Sophia McDermott

Sophia McDermott

Last week my article was published in Jiu JIteira Magazine. I was honored to be on the front cover wrapped in my home country’s flag, proudly representing being the 1st Aussie female to be awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In this interview I discuss my journey as a female practitioner in a man’s world and the many issues that women have to face in this sport. These issue run deep and I am proud to be speaking up and brining awareness to them. I talk about being an empowered female who owns her feminine strength and why its not necessary to suppress your beauty and femininity in order to be taken seriously. I discuss solutions to bring necessary change to demolish the archaic patriarchal system that is in Jiu Jitsu and in society in general so that everyone can thrive. https://jiujiteiramagazine.com/sophia-mcdermott

I share many of my programs that support women’s learning and help to build a community. www.girls-ontop.com is my virtual online interactive platform where any woman can join to learn women specific Jiu Jitsu and do some awesome and fun live workouts with me in an safe and interactive class like setting.

Tune in. Eat right, train right for your body

Sophia McDermott Drysdale FIT(39).jpg

People who don’t know me assume that I train for endless hours a day. In truth I am a single mum who spends most of her time juggle kids, teaching classes and sitting in front of a computer writing. I write for health and fitness magazines and I write personalized plans for people who want to look, feel and perform better. So I don’t workout all day, every day. I can’t. Over the years I have figure out what works for my body, but as a trainer and a coach i have learned a lot about what works for women bodies too.

The key to staying in shape is to train right and eat right. But not only that, its about managing stress and sleeping right too. Optimal health is like baking a cake. You need to factor in everything (all the ingredients) to get the right recipe to make the perfect cake. If one of the ingredients is not right, such as not enough sleep, or not the right amount of food at the right time, then the cake won't turn out right.

The first step is to start listening to your body, so ditch those calorie counters and start actually tuning in to your body. The body is the most amazing machine that is constantly telling you want it need for optimal health. If you are hungry then eat. Stop eating when you are feeling full, no matter how much food is left on your plate. If you are tired, rest. Take note of the difference between true fatigue and laziness. Take note of how you feel after eating certain foods? Do you feel bloated and lethargic? Or do you feel energized and full of vitality?

Tuning in is the 1st step but if anyone would like a little extra guidance feel free to check out my personal plans here or email me at sophia@sophiaFIT.com and I can email you the plan outlines.

Tips to stay on track with your diet for Thanksgiving feast

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful time to enjoy all this delicious food with family and friends. I think it is super important not to deprive yourself of this yummy one-a-year-treat.

However, there is is a difference between enjoying yourself and having a massive splurge to the point where you have blown your diet and consequently you feel like crap for days.

Here are some tips that will help you to stay on track and hep moderate the splurge on Thanksgiving.

Sophia McDermott Drysdale (10) (2).jpg
  • Skip the stuffing & gravy

The stuffing is probably the richest and most calorie laden part of a Thanksgiving meal. It is a bread base that literally sucks up all the fat ad salt like a sponge. If you must have stuffing, limit it to a couple of table spoons at best.

  • For the gravy, if the fat has been scooped off is ok but most gravies are loaded with fat and salt. Limit this too and opt for cranberry sauce to complement your turkey.

  • Opt for sweet potato or yams over normal potato.

Sweet potatoes contain more goodness such as potassium, fiber and vitamin B. Additionally they are high in beta-carotene which your body converts into vitamin A. Just watch the added sugar for those sweet yam based dishes with marshmallows. Baked or matches sweet potato is a great option.

  • Pile our plate high with load of veggies

Green veggies or salads contain far less calories and a lot of nutrients. They are a great way to fill you up without all breaking the diet. Make sure the veggies are steamed or baked with less fat and steer clear of the cheese, fatty, richer sauces.

  • Alternate the alcohol with water.

Another way we break the diet is through drinks, wether it be wine, creamy drinks or sodas. Alternate each alcoholic drink or rich drink with a glass of water and keep the calories in check that way.

It is also super important to drink loads of water which will help with digestion and help to flush out the excess salt from all the rich foods.

Remember to keep your portions in moderation. Don’t just eat because it is in front of you. Listen to your body. Snack a little before hand so that you don’t arrive to the dinner insanely hungry and then then splurge and eat everything in side and finally, keep your water intake up.

My Top Tips to help you stick to your workouts!

It's easy to talk yourself out of working out! Even when you have the best intentions to work out, excuses are so easy to find - “I’m too tired” or "I’m busy," or "The weather is bad." Here are my top tips for staying in the game!

Sophia McDermott Drysdale.19.jpg
  1. On Sunday nights plan your week of workouts! Treat them like an event so make time for them in your daily schedule! Write them down in your diary and put reminders on your phone!

  2. If you workout in the morning, layout your training clothes and shoes before you go to bed so they are ready for when you jump out of bed

  3. If you don’t train before work Have training clothes and shoes in your car so you can stop by the gym on the way home from work

  4. Organise a active date/catch up during the week with friends or family. Other people will keep you accountable!

  5. Have a collection of workouts you can do in your living room for when the weather is miserable and you don’t want to leave the comfort of your home. My SophiaFIT Home Workouts are perfect for this!

  6. Set a goal! Write it down and stick it on the fridge or add it as a daily reminder on your phone. This will act as the driving force when you lack a bit of motivation!

If you are looking for the extra kick, send an email to sophia@sophiafit.com or click here. I would love to work with you and help you achieve your health & fitness goals.
